Johannesburg – African champions, South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, are just hours away from beginning their defence of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The champions, led by astute Coach Desiree Ellis, face Ghana later this evening, Monday, 7 July 2925.
Banyana’s next opponents are Tanzania on 11 July and Mali on 14 July 2025.
The South Africans have experienced players in Amogelang Motau, Lebohang Ramalepe, and Refiloe Jane.
CAF Women’s Footballer of the Year, Thembi Kgatlana, has reportedly not travelled with the team for personal reasons.
As for the much-pubicised players’ strike over unpaid bonuses, Coach Ellis appears to have put the controversy behind her, saying: “We came to Morocco early to prepare, and we are now ready for the game”.
Senior player Refiloe said: “This is the opening game of the tournament for us.
“It’s going to be a very difficult one.
“They are a completely different team, but we are prepared.”
The highly anticipated match will be live on SABC from 18:00.
