Hartswater –  A stolen Ford Ranger with false registration number plates that was fleeing from police crashed head-on with another bakkie, killing five people.

Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon Zwane said the horror collision occurred along the N18 route at Hartswater, Northern Cape.

“Five innocent lives, including a toddler, were lost on Thursday afternoon when two bakkies collided head-on on the N18 route at Hartswater in the Northern Cape,” Zwane said.

“It is alleged that the South African Police Service was in pursuit of a stolen Ford Ranger with false registration number plates when the driver of the fleeing bakkie illegally overtook another vehicle at high speed and lost control of the vehicle, colliding head-on with another bakkie.”

Zwane said the RTMC accident investigators have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.

“The incident has been reported at Hartswater Police Station, and police are investigating a culpable homicide case,” Zwane said.
