Johannesburg – Metro cop Raymond Nkosinathi Mzizi has been sentenced to six years in prison for three counts of culpable homicide by the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court.
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department officer was driving a state vehicle along the Golden Highway when he collided with a Toyota Corolla and a Siyaya minibus taxi.
The deadly collision occurred in June 2018.
Narrating events on that fateful day, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said in a statement on Monday, 4 August 2025: “There were five occupants in the Toyota Corolla, a father, his three daughters, and a grandchild.
“Two daughters and a grandchild died at the scene while the father and one daughter were transported to Baragwanath Hospital for medical treatment.”
Mzizi was arrested at the scene and charged with culpable homicide, drunken driving, and driving a state vehicle without authorisation.
IPID said the investigations were finalised in 2019, and the case was placed on the court roll for trial at the Protea Magistrate’s Court.
However, Mzizi was acquitted on a charge of drunk driving.
Mzizi was found guilty on three counts of culpable homicide and sentenced to six years.
He was further sentenced to 12 months for driving a state vehicle without authorisation.
The sentences were ordered to run concurrently.
