The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) on Thursday, 14 August 2025, said there was a protest by about 300 residents outside Maponya Mall.

Law enforcement units from the South African Police Service (SAPS), National Traffic, Gauteng Traffic, and JMPD were on the scene.

“The protesters have requested to be addressed by the mall’s management. The situation remains calm and is under police control,” said JMPD Spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla.

“As a precaution, Chris Hani Road between Marula Street and Mokoena Street has been closed, and Maponya Mall is currently not open to the public.

“We urge residents to avoid the area if possible and use alternative routes.”
