Durban – Students watched in horror when a male student at Durban University of Technology (DUT) jumped to his death from the roof of a high-rise building at the Steve Biko Campus.

The student, who can not be named until his next of kin have been informed of the tragedy, was seen climbing over the railing before jumping to his death on Tuesday, 19 August 2025.

Police officers and paramedics attended to the apparent suicide that left many students traumatised and lectures disrupted.

The DUT has expressed “immense sadness” and has offered condolences to the student’s family, friends, and classmates.

The university has also encouraged students who witnessed the tragic incident to seek counselling and emotional support at the institute.

A statement issued by the DUT Students Representative Council (SRC) said: “It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of a tragic incident that occurred today on our Durban campus, resulting in the loss of one of our fellow students”.

A student, who has asked to remain anonymous, said seeing the student jump to his death was a traumatic experience.

Soon after the incident, videos of the tragedy were circulated on social media.

However, the SRC statement warned against sharing such videos.

“We have noted with great concern the circulation of disturbing images and videos of the incident on social media platforms,” said the SRC.

“We strongly urge all students and members of the community to refrain from sharing such content.

“As a sign of respect for the dignity of the deceased and consideration for their family, who may not yet be fully aware of the situation, we appeal to everyone to immediately delete any such material.”

The statement added: “The circulation of this content is deeply insensitive and will not be tolerated. Anyone found to be distributing these videos or images will face strict consequences.

“Let us stand together during this difficult moment as a community united in compassion, respect, and solidarity.

“May the soul of our fellow student rest in eternal peace.”
