Johannesburg – The police constable, who witnessed the murder of Gauteng Crime Warden Chesnay Kepler and has been arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
The 35-year-old Constable linked to the Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) at the Eldorado Park Police Station was arrested on Friday, 29 August 2025.
IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping said the constable’s case was linked to the murder of Kepler.
He is accused of attempted murder and failing to report a crime scene to IPID.
Kepler was fatally shot, allegedly by her boyfriend, Police Sergeant Mandla Buthelezi, last December.
Sergeant Buthelezi, who is out on bail, was also stationed at the Eldorado Park Police Station at the time of the incident.

Suping said the constable was with Sergeant Buthelezi at the time of the incident.
The constable allegedly assaulted Keppler’s three friends after they were engaged in an argument with him.
Thereafter, the Constable allegedly fired shots in the direction of Kepler’s friends, as they were leaving the scene.
Suping said the arrested constable is facing charges of Attempted murder, Defeating the ends of justice, and the Contravention of Section (29(1) and 33(3) of the IPID Act because he failed to report a crime.
“The accused will remain in custody until his first court appearance on Monday, 01 September 2025, at the Protea Magistrate’s Court,” the IPID spokesperson said.
