Cape Town – Neil de Beer, the leader of the United Independent Movement (UIM) political party, has passed away.
Announcing the sad news on Saturday, 30 August 2025, the UIM said: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our great leader and friend, Neil De Beer”.
The UIM further stated: “Today, our hearts are heavy with sorrow as we bid farewell to a truly remarkable soul, a friend whose kindness touched every life and a leader whose vision inspired us all.
“The loss is profound, for we have lost not just a guide, but a beacon of hope and love.”
De Beer, a former national security advisor to South Africa’s first democratic President, Nelson Mandela, founded the UIM, initially as a civil society movement before it morphed into a political party.
The former uMkhonto we Sizwe operative formed the UIM after he lost faith in the African National Congress.
In March 2021, De Beer said in an interview that he and his supporters were “tired” of the “ultra-left and the ultra-right” in South African politics and that he and his party would represent the “moderate middle”.
Friends and family lamented that De Beer bravely fought to the end.
Commenting on the passing of UIM president, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said: “In Neil de Beer’s passing, South Africa has lost a powerful voice for change”.
In a statement made available to The Bulrushes, the DA said: “With his uncompromising and often confrontational style, De Beer upset many, but he also spoke for many.
“His convictions and fearless personality made him a force to be reckoned with and a valuable partner to the Multi-Party Charter.
“For his role in bringing the Charter about, the DA will remember him fondly.”
The DA added that it extends “deepest condolences to the UIM” and “Our condolences and prayers go out to his loved ones.
“In life, he was a man of restless energy. May he now find eternal rest.”
