Johannesburg – Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has rubbished reports that said the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has reopened a corruption case against him and referred the matter to the police for further investigation.
Earlier this week, AfriForum reported that the head of the National Prosecution Service (NPS) had reopened a multimillion rand corruption case against Premier Mabuyane and other senior state officials.
AfriForum stated that the matter had been referred back to the police for further investigation.

However, Premier Mabuyane has broken his silence on the matter and rejected Afriforum’s claims as false.
A communique issued by the Provincial Communications Services in the Eastern Cape on Wednesdsay, 3 September 2025, stated: “The statement issued by AfriForum claiming the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has stated that a case against Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has been reopened and referred to the police for further investigation, is an illegal attempt to influence the independent decision taken by the NPA and communicated to Premier Mabuyane”.
The communique added: ‘’What this Afrikaner pressure group is attempting to do is illegal and is not allowed by law because the NPA’s decision not to prosecute Premier Mabuyane was informed by their own independent engagement with the information given to them by the police.
“AfriForum’s latest attempt is a classic pattern of attempting to illegally and unduly influence the NPA to make an unlawful decision tainted by harassment of both the NPA and Premier Mabuyane.”
AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit also stated that it has been briefed to consider prosecuting Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane and other senior state officials in a multi-million rand corruption case.
Commenting further on the matter, the Provincial Communications Services stated: “It is clear that their threat of private prosecution has no prospect of success, hence they are now trying to unduly influence the NPA.
“There is no justification for the NPA to rescind their decision not to prosecute Premier Mabuyane on this matter.
“This statement by AfriForum is a pattern of abuse of law and harassment of Premier Mabuyane.”
The Provincial Communications Services added: “Premier Mabuyane did not commit a crime, did not break any of the laws of our country, and welcomes the correct and just decision taken by the NPA after their independent process, which resulted in them not prosecuting him on this matter”.
The NPA was yet to comment on the matter.
