Durban – The scholar transport driver who crashed his minibus taxi over a bridge in Impendle, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), and ran away, has been arrested.
The minibus taxi was ferrying learners on Monday, 15 September 2025, when it inexplicably veered off the road and landed several meters below a bridge.
After the crash, it was established that 20 learners were seriously injured. They were transported to Gomane Clinic and Harry Gwala Regional Hospital (Edendale Hospital) for treatment.
The injured learners are from Matomela High School, Luthando High School, and Sthunjwana Primary School.
Authorities discovered that the driver had fled the scene and could not be found.
However, on Tuesday, 16 September 2025, KZN Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma announced that the minibus taxi driver had been found and arrested.
Shockingly, the MEC revealed that: “The driver has no driver’s license and no Professional Driving Permit, and he is only in possession of a learner’s license”.
To make matters worse, the minibus taxi was not roadworthy.
Commenting further, MEC Duma said: “Unfortunately, this is the third accident involving a school learner transport in Umgungundlovu District within four days.
“Four learners died on Thursday, and others are still in the hospital.”
The MEC called on the South African National Taxi Council in KZN to take measures to stop the road carnage.
