DARK CITY: Power outage in Pretoria CBD and surrounding areas blamed on theft and vandalism
SHARE

Pretoria – The power outage in the Pretoria CBD, Salvokop, Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre, Pretoria West Industrial, and surrounding areas will continue for several days.

The City of Tshwane, on Thursday, 18 September 2025, stated that the power outage was caused by theft and vandalism along Struben Street, near Cowie Street caused severe damage to the city’s 132kV Bellom Princess Park feeders.

Preliminary assessments revealed the severity and complexity of the damage, which the City stated would require several days to repair before power could be restored.

“Following intensive engagements with the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), it has become clear that the restoration process will require several days to complete due to the specialised equipment and components involved,” the City said.

While the exact estimated time of restoration cannot be provided at this juncture, the City assured all affected stakeholders that every possible measure was being prioritised to minimise disruption and restore supply as soon as “humanly and practically possible”.

“The repair work to be undertaken is complex and massive, and will take several days to complete, given the severity of the damage to the electricity infrastructure and network,” the City said.

While appealing for “patience and understanding,” the City of Tshwane said it “wishes to extend its sincerest apologies to residents, businesses and institutions affected by the ongoing power outage”.
