Mthatha – A woman in her 20s has died in a minibus taxi crash on the R61 toward Mthatha, near the Corana area, in the Eastern Cape.
ALS Paramedics said a fully laden taxi had somehow lost control and rolled numerous times, ejecting some of the passengers.
At least 14 passengers were hurt in the crash, which occurred at about 20:30 on Heritage Day, Wednesday, 24 September 2025.
ALS Paramedics from Mthatha said on arrival, together with EMRS, they found chaos.
“A fully laden taxi had somehow lost control and rolled numerous times, ejecting some of the passengers,” said ALS Paramedics.
“Immediately, a triage system was set up, and more ambulances were dispatched to assist.”
A female passenger, believed to be in her 20s, had sustained critical injuries.
“Whilst paramedics worked to stabilise her on scene, she went into a state of cardiac arrest and, despite resuscitation efforts, unfortunately, she passed away on the scene,” said ALS Paramedics.
“Fourteen other patients were stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby Hospital for further care that they required.
“At this stage, the events leading up to the crash were unknown; however, SAPS [South African Police Service] were in attendance and will be investigating further.”
