PASSED AWAY: First Group Chairman and Co-Founder Stuart Lamont

Durban – First Group has announced the passing of its Group Chairman and Co-Founder, Stuart Lamont.

The group chairman passed away on Tuesday, 7 October 2025.

Together with Tony Ridl, Stuart Lamont co-founded First Group and played an instrumental role in shaping it into one of South Africa’s most recognised names in the hospitality industry.

Under his guidance, First Group flourished through innovation, commitment, and a deep understanding of the hospitality sector, fostering a culture of service that helped define the Group’s success.

He was a respected business leader, known for his drive, determination, and vision in building and growing successful enterprises.

His professional legacy remains a cornerstone of the organisation that he helped build and lead.

Stuart’s leadership was also marked by his ability to identify and develop potential in people and transforming ideas into opportunities that benefited generations of employees and guests alike.

He exemplified the toughness of Winston Churchill – a fierce, formidable leader to his peers, yet behind that iron strength was the spirit of a man with a heart for the underdog, incredibly generous and devoted to building a great and enduring life.’

His wife, Rioma, described him as a man who “loved deeply – his children, his family, and his extended family from all around the world”.

And together, they built a life rooted in that love.

She noted that Stuart ”had an adventurous spirit and a childlike passion for learning and growing”.

He lived “with a curiosity that never dimmed and a joy for life that lifted everyone around him”.

Stuart is survived by Rioma, their children – Shaun and Nikki, Donald and Lauren, Jason and Sinead, Tanya, David and Christie – and their grandchildren Emma and Reece, Connor and Jake, Maddox, Linx-Dior and Cyrus.

He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose love for his family and passion for life extended far beyond the boardroom.

The Lamont family and First Group express their heartfelt gratitude for the many messages of support and condolences received during this time.

Stuart Lamont’s legacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing and working for him.
