Johannesburg – The Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced that the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) retained its seat in KwaZulu-Natal in a by-election, while in Mpumalanga, the African National Congress (ANC) won a seat previously held by an independent candidate.
The by-elections were held on Wednesday, 17 December 2025.
In a statement made available to The Bulrushes on Thursday, 18 December 2025, the IEC announced the by-election results as follows:
Kwa-Zulu Natal
The new IFP Councillor is:
• Wiseman Fihlokwakhe Njoko in ward 17 in uMfolozi Local Municipality: KZN281.
The IFP retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 62.43% of the total votes cast, compared to 50.90% in 2021.
Voter turnout was 51.30%.
Mpumalanga
The new ANC Councillor is:
• Nhlanganiso Ntando Sakhile Motha in ward 14 in Mkhondo Local Municipality: MP303.
The ANC secured the seat previously held by an independent candidate in the 2021 Municipal Elections, obtaining 53.88% of the total votes cast, compared to 45.30% in 2021.
Voter turnout was 44.34%.
