Moretele – A bolt of lightning turned the Mphebatho Troop Festival at the Dertig Sports Ground, in the North West, into a tragedy.
Moretele Local Municipality Mayor Masango George said two people were declared dead after they were struck by lightning on Saturday, 3 January 2026.
The mayor said more than 10 people were struck by the lightning bolt during bad weather.
“Unfortunately, two people were declared dead,” Mayor George lamented.
“Emergency services arrived quickly, and all other injured individuals received medical care.”
Mayor George said, for safety reasons, the festival was put on hold immediately.
“This decision was made to protect everyone at the event, including community members, performers, and officials.
“The municipality is working closely with emergency services and local authorities.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those who passed away and wish all other affected individuals a speedy recovery,” stated Mayor George.
The names of the deceased have not yet been released.
