Polokwane – A 23-year-old man has been hospitalised after he was wounded in a shoot-out with police at Rapotokwane village, Limpopo.
Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the wounded man was a suspect in a business robbery involving two others.
Allegations are that the three men targeted a general dealer in the Rust de Winter policing area.
“Two suspects reportedly entered the shop posing as customers,” said Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba.
“While at the counter, one of the suspects produced a firearm and threatened the employee, demanding cash.”
Brigadier Mashaba said an undisclosed amount of money was stolen.
“The second suspect allegedly moved behind the counter and stole several items, including cartons of cigarettes and a flash machine,” the police spokesperson said.
“The suspects then fled the scene and joined a third accomplice who was waiting in a black Toyota Yaris vehicle.
“While attempting to flee, the suspects encountered police officers who were conducting routine patrols in the area.”
Brigadier Mashaba said a shootout ensued between the police and the suspects.
During the exchange, one suspect was shot by the police.
The wounded suspect was taken to the hospital under police guard and placed under arrest.
The suspects abandoned their car on the side of the road and fled on foot.
“Police confiscated the vehicle and recovered one pistol with an empty magazine at the scene,” said Brigadier Mashaba.

The Police have opened cases of business robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The wounded 23-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court once he is declared medically fit to do so.
Brigadier Mashaba said the search for two other suspects is ongoing.
