Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Jackie Macie says traffic officers will be deployed on the roads ahead of school opening

Mbombela (Nelspruit) – Authorities in Mpumalanga have vowed to beef up law enforcement on various routes ahead of the opening of schools next week.

The Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison department said law enforcement officers “will leave no stone unturned” when enforcing road rules.

High traffic volumes were expected on several routes, including R573 (Moloto road), R23, R40, R36, N4, N12, N17, and N3.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Jackie Macie, on Thursday, 8 January 2026, urged motorists to be responsible by following road rules and prioritising road safety.

“We need to appreciate the motorists who always remember that it is their responsibility to ensure safety when on the road,” MEC Macie stated.

“We will continue to encourage those who break the law to begin to respect the rules of the road.

“Road Safety is everybody’s business; that is why we encourage all users of the road to play their part by using it responsibly.”

MEC Macie appealed to parents not to hesitate to report school transport operators if they are breaking the law.

“Don’t risk the lives of your children in the name of saving money,” MEC Macie said.

“We’ve had a lot of crashes in the past involving school children.

“Parents can help the government to curb these crashes by reporting lawlessness,”

The MEC made his passionate plea for good behaviour on the roads just hours after four people died and two others were injured following a head-on collision on the R23 road between Standerton and Pardekop in Mpumalanga.
