Mpumalanga Deadly Crashes: 5 Perish In Night Crash On R23, 4 Others Die In Separate Collision

Balfour – Five people died in a head-on collision between a sedan and an articulated truck on the R23 between Balfour and Greylingstad in Mpumalang a.

The deadly crash occurred at night on Thursday, 8 January 2026.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said the collision “happened around 19:30”.

Mmusi said all five people declared dead at the crash scene had been travelling in the sedan when tragedy struck.

The names of the dead have not yet been disclosed.

” An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash,” Mmusi said.

“Drivers are also urged to take resting breaks when traveling long distances. The department sends condolences to the families of the deceased.”

Earlier the same day in Standerton, four people died, and two others were injured in a head-on collision involving a bakkie and a sedan.

The collision occurred along the R23 between Standerton and Perdekop, Mpumalanga, in the afternoon.

Authorities are probing the cause of the crash.
