Meanwhile, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa have issued a statement expressing “serious concern” about the rise in road fatalities from road crashes involving public transport modes.

“Their concerns were raised amid today’s tragic loss of eleven lives from a serious collision between a truck and a minibus in Durban,” the statement said.

“The Road Crash occurred on Thursday, 29 January 2026, at approximately 08h30 on Wanda Cele Drive, Isipingo in Durban.”

The crash involved a Toyota minibus taxi and a Hino interlink truck type vehicle, which was involved in an angled crash.

The Department of Transport confirmed that the crash resulted in 11 fatalities.

“The precise cause of the crash remains the subject of ongoing investigation. Creecy and Hlengwa have directed the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to investigate the cause of the crash, working together with local authorities,” the statement said.

“The preliminary investigation report is expected in 48 hours once the RTMC begins its investigation.

“Creecy and Hlengwa have also extended their heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased during this challenging time, and they wish for a swift recovery for all the injured.

“They have also urged all road users to be extremely cautious on the road.”
