Johannesburg – Chief Justice Mandisa Maya has declined an invitation to attend an award event organised by African Leadership Magazine.
Commenting on the matter, the Office of the Chief Justice stated that it has noted media reports, including coverage by South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), suggesting that the Chief Justice will attend, or is associated with, an award event organised by African Leadership Magazine.
“For the avoidance of any doubt, while the Chief Justice was nominated for an award by the publication, she carefully considered the nomination and formally declined both the award and the invitation to attend the event,” her office stated in a terse statement made available to The Bulrushes on Thursday, 26 February 2026.
“This decision was communicated directly to the organisers.”
“The Chief Justice unequivocally distances herself from the award, the magazine, the event, and all related promotional activities.
“She has no association with, and is not participating in, the event in any capacity.
“Any public statements, media reports, or promotional materials suggesting otherwise are incorrect and unauthorised.”
