Polokwane – A 27-year-old woman has been sent to prison for setting fire to her ex-boyfriend’s house in a fit of rage and jealousy.

The Lephalale Regional Court, on Tuesday, 24 March 2026, sentenced the accused, Meriam Tutje, to seven years in prison for arson committed at Steve Biko Phase 4, Villa Nora, Limpopo.

The victim’s house and belongings were extensively damaged during the fire.

The case was assigned to investigating officer Sergeant George Lebudi of Villa Nora Detectives.

The court found that Tutje had “unlawfully and intentionally” set fire to her ex-boyfriend’s house in a fit of rage and jealousy.

Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has praised the investigating officer and the prosecution team for their commitment and professionalism, which led to the conviction and sentencing.

“The sentencing sends a strong message that acts of violence and destruction of property will not be tolerated,” said  Lieutenant General Hadebe.

“Community members are urged to resolve disputes amicably and to seek assistance from relevant structures such as psychologists, pastors, police, community leaders, and social workers rather than resorting to criminal conduct.”
