Pretoria – Suspended police sergeant Fannie Nkosi, who sometimes smiled and laughed during his six-day testimony at the Madlanga Commission, is not laughing anymore – he is in a sticky situation.
Nkosi, who was suspended from his job with the Organised Crime Unit, was arrested after a police raid on his Pretoria North home on Thursday, 2 April 2026, which uncovered firearms, ammunition, a hand grenade, and several case dockets.

Today, Tuesday, 7 April 2026, Nkosi’s bid for freedom failed after the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court declined to hear his bail application.
He is facing multiple charges, including:
- Theft
- Defeating the ends of justice
- Contravention of the Firearms Control Act (including possession of unlicensed ammunition, improper storage of firearms, and failure to secure firearms/ammunition safely)
- Possession of explosives (including a hand grenade/stun grenade)
Nkosi’s matter was adjourned to next week, Monday, 13 April 2026.
Although the suspended sergeant told the court he feared for his life behind bars, he was remanded in custody, with the state opposing bail.
After the brief appearance, police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe revealed that during the raid on Nkosi’s home, investigators seized seven guns and found six archived serious-crime dockets, mainly linked to cash-in-transit robberies and hijackings.
Brigadier Mathe told reporters that the dockets found in a Wendy house were officially closed as undetected and should not have been in Nkosi’s possession.
She said the police were trying to find out how Nkosi obtained the dockets and why.
This was the second time that police raided Nkosi’s house.
A prior search of his home in October 2025 found a credit card belonging to jailed businessman Matlala, and a large sum of cash of more than R380 000 was found in a safe.
Nkosi, who has been implicated in wrongdoing at the Madlanga Commission, was suspended from work earlier this year, on 28 March.
Commenting further on the matter, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Gauteng Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the 42-year-old sergeant’s home was raided after a tip-off.
“It is alleged that the task team emanating from the Madlanga Commission received a tip-off regarding the unlawful ammunition at the accused’s place of residence,” Mahanjana said.
The NPA spokesperson said that, on 2 April 2026, the task team executed a search warrant at the accused’s place of residence in Pretoria North.
“Upon the execution of the search warrant, the police found firearms, ammunition, a stun grenade, South African Police Service police dockets, and state-issued items were discovered at various locations within his premises,” said Mahanjana.
“During the search, a substantial amount of cash of more than R50 000 was concealed beneath a mattress.
“The accused was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the origin of the money. Following the search, the accused was arrested and remains remanded in custody.”
