Emalahleni (Formerly Witbank) – Three suspected robbers were fatally wounded in a shootout with the police and security guards at the Highveld Mall in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga.

Mpumalanga Police Spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masando said the deadly shootout occurred on Wednesday, 15 April 2026, after a robbery at a jewellery shop.

Narrating events leading to the shootout, Colonel Masando said a group of armed robbers stormed into one of the jewellery shops.

“It is reported that approximately eight armed suspects stormed into a jewellery shop in Highveld Mall, Witbank, and held the security guard and the employee at gunpoint, before robbing them of an undisclosed amount of jewellery,” said Colonel Masando.

“The suspects were intercepted soon after they drove out of the Mall, in different getaway cars.

“During the incident, three of the suspects were fatally shot while others fled from the scene and are still at large.”

Colonel Masando said the investigation of the robbery was underway

“At the crime scene, the police recovered three pistols, a rifle, and rounds of ammunition believed to have been used by the suspects,” the police spokesperson said.

“A Toyota RAV4, fitted with false registration number plates, that was also used as a getaway car, was recovered.”

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of the suspects who fled is urged to call the  police national crime stop line 08600 1011.
