Pretoria – The City of Tshwane has confirmed the temporary shutdown of the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant following heavy rainfall that compromised raw water quality.
The plant was taken offline on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, after recent downpours caused high turbidity levels — resulting in cloudy water that cannot be safely processed under normal treatment conditions.
The shutdown has disrupted supply to Bronkhorstspruit Town, Zithobeni, Ekandustria, Ekangala, Rethabiseng, and parts of the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality that rely on the Bronkhorstspruit system.
City officials said process controllers are closely monitoring water quality and plant operations. The facility will resume production once conditions improve and treatment standards can be met safely.
“The City of Tshwane apologises for the inconvenience and thanks residents for their patience, understanding, and cooperation during this period,” the municipality said in a statement.
