Durban – It was a sombre atmosphere at the Durban Christian Centre Jesus Dome in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, where a funeral service was held for slain 52-year-old Captain Louis Cornelius Nel.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, and the province’s Premier Thami Ntuli were among the mourners on Friday, 8 May 2026.
Captain Nel, who was a former member of the Special Task Force, and another police officer were shot in an ambush at Mount Edgecombe outside Durban last Thursday, 30 April 2026.
Captain Nel had recently been promoted to the rank of captain in the Crime Intelligence unit after leaving the Special Task Force.
Captain Nel, unfortunately, died on the scene. The other wounded officer was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.
Premier Ntuli described Captain Nel as a courageous and committed law enforcement officer who dedicated his life to serving KwaZulu-Natal.
Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi said, while it was difficult to lose colleagues, the “men and women in blue” should not be discouraged by the fatal attacks on police officers.
He said, instead, they would leave no stone unturned to find the perpetrators.
“The loss of a captain within Crime Intelligence is therefore a loss for the South African Police Service as a whole, because we lose the foundation of our crime-fighting efforts,” Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi said.
“What I can assure the family and friends of Captain Nel is that we will find his killers dead or alive,”
“Having worn the badge myself and having gone through the rigorous training that makes you an elite member of the South African Police Service, I understand the anger that all Special Task Force members are feeling right now.”
Captain Nel was honoured with a South African Police Service official funeral.
