Standerton — Ten people were killed in a horrific head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a bus on the R39 near Standerton, Mpumalanga.
The deadly collision occurred earlier today, Thursday, 21 May 2026.
Eight victims died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to the hospital.
All the deceased were passengers in the minibus taxi on their way to work.
The bus driver sustained minor injuries, and another occupant escaped unharmed.
Mpumalanga Community Safety spokesperson Moeti Mmusi confirmed the tragedy, saying: “Ten people died in a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a bus.
“Eight died at the scene, one en route to hospital, and another while receiving treatment in Standerton,” he said.
Mmusi added that MEC Jackie Macie has conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and wished the survivors a speedy recovery.
Preliminary reports suggest misty conditions may have reduced visibility at the time of the crash.
The exact cause is still under investigation, though reckless or negligent driving has not been ruled out.
