Gaborone – The Botswana Government is mourning the death of former Botswana Police Service Commissioner Simon Adolf Hirschfeld, the first Motswana to lead the police force after independence.
Hirschfeld passed away on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, at the age of 90. The cause of death has not yet been made public.
He retired in July 1995 after serving as Commissioner for 24 years, capping a distinguished policing career that spanned nearly four decades.
Minister for State President, Defence and Security Moeti Mohwasa conveyed condolences to Hirschfeld’s family, the Botswana Police Service, friends, and the nation.
“It is with deep sadness and a profound sense of national loss that I address you today on the passing of a distinguished son of Botswana, former Commissioner of the Botswana Police Service, Mr. Adolf Hirschfeld,” Mohwasa said.
He described Hirschfeld as a disciplined and dedicated leader who executed his responsibilities with distinction.
“Mr. Hirschfeld’s passing marks the end of an era in the history of our national security institutions,” Mohwasa said.
“Over a remarkable career spanning 39 years and 9 months, he rose through the ranks with professionalism and unwavering commitment, retiring on 31 July 1995 as Commissioner of the Botswana Police Service.”
Hirschfeld will be laid to rest in Gaborone next Tuesday, 9 June 2026.
