Johannesburg – Higher Education and Training Minister Buti Manamela says he “learned with sadness” of the passing of John Pampallis, a scholar, educationist, historian, and former public servant.
Announcing his passing on Thursday, 4 June 2026, Karin Pampallis said: “I am so sorry to have to tell you this, but John passed away last night. “
“He was struggling with another bout of pneumonia. It was his wish to die at home, and he was peaceful at the end.
“Irene and I were both with him at the end. We’re still making the necessary arrangements and will let you know about the funeral soon.”
In a terse statement, the Department of Higher Education and Training acknowledged that Pampallis dedicated his career to the advancement of education in South Africa.
“He played a significant role in shaping policy and supporting transformation within the schooling and post-school education system,” the statement said.
“His contributions to South African history and education remain part of his professional legacy.”
The department said Minister Manamela acknowledges Pampallis’s intellect, integrity, and commitment to social justice and passion for youth development.
Among Pampallis’s key roles was his support for the transition from the Department of Education to the Department of Higher Education and Training, including leading the development of the White Paper on Post-School Education and Training.
“The Minister and the entire Post-School Education and Training sector extend their condolences to his wife, Karin, his daughter, Irene, and to his family, friends, and colleagues,” the statement said.
