Mbombela (Nelspruit) – The South African Police Service’s (SAPS) search-and-rescue team has recovered a vehicle that had plunged into the Crocodile River in the early hours.

Inside the vehicle were two bodies.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdluli, said: “Police received a complaint about a white vehicle that had plunged into the Crocodile River at about 04:00 in the morning”.

Witnesses told the police that the vehicle was coming from the University of Mpumalanga and KaMagugu intersection when it plunged into the river.

When the SAPS search-and-rescue team arrived at the scene earlier on Sunday, 7 June 2026, they located the vehicle with two bodies trapped inside.

The bodies of a man and a woman were seen being removed from the scene, but their identities were yet to be revealed.
