Pretoria – Five MORE senior police officers have been suspended in relation to matters arising from the dodgy multi-million-rand tender awarded to Medicare24, owned by crime-accused businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
In a terse statement issued late on Monday, 8 June 2026, police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed the “suspension of five additional senior officers in relation to matters arising from the Medicare24 tender”.
Last week on Friday, 5 June 2026, the South African Police Service (SAPS) announced the suspension of nine police officers from the Bid Evaluation Committee, which allegedly overlooked anomalies and awarded a multi-million-rand tender to Medicare24.

The Medicare24 contract with SAPS, which was the subject of the ongoing Madlanga Commission of inquiry, was a R360 million tender awarded in 2024 to provide health services for police staff.
However, the contract became mired in allegations of corruption, fraud, and irregular procurement, leading to its cancellation in 2025 and the arrest of 12 senior police officers.

“Internal departmental processes are currently underway, and in the interest of preserving the integrity of these processes, the SAPS will not provide further comment at this stage,” said Brigadier Mathe.
Matlala has been denied bail several times in another matter related to the 2023 alleged attempted assassination of his ex-girlfriend, socialite Tebogo Thobejane.
