Johannesburg – The South African government has urged fans to don the Bafana Bafana jersey today, Friday, 12 June 2026, despite the 2-0 loss to Mexico in their Opening game.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially kicked off on Thursday night with a dazzling opening ceremony at the iconic Estadio Azteca, followed by a fiery Group A clash that ended in a 2-0 victory for hosts Mexico over South Africa.
Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez scored for the hosts.
Bafana’s Sphephelo Sithole was sent off early in the second half (49th minute) for a last-man foul on Mexico’s Brian Gutiérrez, denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Bafana Substitute, Themba Zwane (South Africa) was shown a straight red card in the 84th minute after a VAR review for striking Mexico’s Roberto Alvarado in the face.
Mexico also had a player sent off late in the second half.
César Montes was sent off in stoppage time (90+2 minutes) for a foul on Khuliso Mudau, denying a goalscoring chance.
However, in South Africa, the government commended Bafana Bafana for their spirited performance.
“While the final score was not what the nation had hoped for, the team represented South Africa with unity, determination, and a sense of pride on the world’s biggest stage,” the government said in a statement.
“We encourage the team, coaching staff and support team to remain focused and confident as they prepare for the remaining matches in the group stage.
“Together, we can inspire our team to greater heights; South Africans are urged to rally behind our boys and cheer them on as they carry the hope of the nation.
“Wear your green and gold on Bafana Fridays and continue to stand united behind our national team throughout their FIFA World Cup journey.
“South Africa remains proud of Bafana Bafana and believes in their ability to bounce back stronger.
“ALL OF US. ALL IN. KAOFELA.”
