Durban – More than 21 000 runners have embarked on the 89km Comrades Marathon Up Run from Durban City Hall to Pietermaritzburg.
The runners took off early Sunday morning, 14 June 2026, with individuals and teams taking up in the 99th Comrades Marathon.
The star-studded field includes South Africa’s Gerda Steyn and Tete Dijana, alongside international ultrarunning legends Piet Wiersma and Aleksandr Sorokin.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) team is among the team efforts to participants.
SAPS said police officers from across South Africa have spent months preparing for the race while continuing to serve and protect their communities.
“Today, they swap their uniforms for running shoes, carrying with them the same discipline and determination that define their daily commitment to the fight against crime,” SAPS said.
Correctional Services Athletics Club members are also taking part in the iconic race.
