Touws River – At least 16 people died after the bus they were travelling in overturned near Touws River in the Western Cape.
Twenty occupants sustained injuries and were transported to Worcester Hospital.
The bus was transporting 73 passengers from Cape Town to Idutywa in the Eastern Cape along the N1 when tragedy struck at about 1:30 am, earlier today, Thursday, 2 July 2026.
Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson Simon Zwane said: “It is alleged that the bus swerved to avoid colliding with a delivery vehicle when the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned”.
Emergency Medical Services are currently busy with recovery at the scene.
The bus crash at Touws River, about 180km outside of Cape Town, was the second deadly bus crash this week.
Earlier this week in Limpopo, a driver died when his bus, transporting Malawians, overturned.
Several passengers were treated for injuries.
Zwane said the Road Traffic Management Corporation is involved in investigating both crashes.
