Johannesburg – The South African Post Office (SAPO) has announced that it will provide the electronic distribution of legally served Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) notices.
As South Africa’s designated postal operator under the Universal Postal Union framework, SAPO said it will provide the electronic distribution of legally served AARTO notices.
SAPO also revealed that the Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) has launched Phase Two of the National AARTO Electronic Communication Framework.
This will support the national implementation of the AARTO programme, which became operational nationally from 1 July 2026.
The proclamation was signed by President Cyril Ramaphosa on 24 June 2026.
This Phase Two will be implemented across 62 metropolitan areas and municipal areas nationwide.
“Using electronic communication channels, including WhatsApp, SMS, MMS and email, motorists will receive secure, legally served notices with improved speed, efficiency, and traceability,” SAPO explained in a statement made available to The Bulrushes today, Thursday, 2 July 2026.
SAPO Acting Chief Executive Officer Fathima Gany said: “SAPO is utilising SAPO’s e-Reg platform for AARTO notices, which was launched in September 2024, and which has successfully provided customers with secure and legally recognised electronic delivery of official notices.”
The strategic collaboration between RTIA and SAPO supports the national rollout of AARTO through a secure and scalable communication platform that strengthens governance, improves service delivery and enhances the customer experience.
The statement said SAPO and RTIA will continue to work with municipalities to ensure the successful implementation of the AARTO programme.
