Johannesburg – Police and soldiers have swooped on the Losberg Kloof Mine in Westonaria, where more than 150 suspected illegal miners have been arrested.
Gauteng Police, together with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and Sibanye Protection Services, conducted Operation Prosper at Losberg Kloof Mine in Westonaria earlier today, Tuesday, 7 July 2026.
The operation was aimed at combating illegal mining activities and transnational crime in the area, including the Sibanye Stillwater-owned facility on Gauteng’s West Rand.
Law enforcers descended on the mine site, discovering suspects underground and in surrounding areas.
The suspects were lying on the ground as security forces secured the scene, which remained active hours after the operation began.
Authorities said many of the arrested suspects were foreign nationals, primarily from Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Lesotho.
They face several charges including illegal mining, immigration violations, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Authorities seized mining equipment, tools, a pistol, AK-47 ammunition, food supplies, and alcohol.
At least two suspects face additional charges related to ammunition possession and aiding illegal immigrants.
One nearby homeowner was also arrested for allegedly harbouring the illegal miners.
Gauteng police spokesperson confirmed the operation forms part of a broader six-month effort to combat illicit mining, which has damaged infrastructure, fueled violent crime, and posed safety risks in the gold belt region.
Illegal mining has long plagued the West Rand, drawing public frustration over associated violence and environmental harm.
“This operation sends a strong message that illegal mining will not be tolerated,” a police official said.
Investigations continue as more suspects may be processed.
The raid underscores intensified multi-agency efforts against a lucrative underground economy that endangers lives and undermines legitimate mining operations.
