Johannesburg – All four suspects arrested over the dodgy Ekurhuleni Metro Blue Lights matter and alleged cover-up have been remanded in custody after they appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court today, Thursday, 9 July 2026.
While suspended Ekurhuleni Legal Risk Services Head Kemi Behari and suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Acting Chief Commissioner Julius Mkhwanazi were granted bail of R50 000 each, but the payments office had closed.
As a result, they were remanded in custody at a police station.
Retired Ekurhuleni City Manager Imogen Mashazi and suspended Ekurhuleni Human Resources Head Linda Gxasheka were also remanded in custody as their bail applications could not be concluded because the state needed to verify their addresses.
Both women were remanded in custody and were expected back in court tomorrow, Friday 10 July 2026, to finalise their bail applications.
The suspects were arrested yesterday, Wednesday 8 July 2026, in connection with enabling unlawful agreements with crime-accused businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, which allowed his private security vehicles to be unlawfully fitted with blue lights.
After the anomaly surfaced, they allegedly shielded Mkhwanazi from disciplinary action.
When the court adjourned, Mashazi gave someone a thumbs up, and when she turned around, she appeared to make an angry gesture at someone else before she was led to the holding cells below.
