Johannesburg – With the winter school holidays in full swing, parents across Gauteng are searching for the ultimate way to get the kids off their screens and into the fresh air.

Just a short drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, nestled in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind, the Bothongo Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve offers an action-packed, budget-friendly winter holiday destination where families can enjoy wildlife, adventure, great food and unforgettable experiences all in one place.

Experience wildlife up close

No visit to the reserve is complete without a game drive.

Families can choose between exploring the reserve at their own pace on a self-drive game drive or joining a guided game drive led by knowledgeable guides who share fascinating insights into the reserve’s wildlife and conservation efforts.

Visitors have the opportunity to encounter a wide variety of animals, including white rhino, lion, wildebeest, wild dog, zebra, giraffe, numerous antelope species and much more.

Witness predator feeding

One of the reserve’s most popular attractions is the daily Predator Feeding at the Predator Camp, where visitors can witness some of Africa’s most iconic predators during feeding time while learning more about their behaviour and conservation.

Predator Feeding takes place at 13:00, Tuesday to Friday, as well as weekends and public holidays.

Discover the fascinating world of reptiles

Reptile lovers can continue their adventure at the Snake & Reptile Park, where they can safely learn about a fascinating variety of snakes, reptiles and other species.

The attraction offers an educational experience that helps visitors better understand these often misunderstood animals while highlighting their important role in nature.

Explore the underground wonders of the Bothongo WonderCave

Step back in time, literally millions of years, with a guided tour of the Bothongo WonderCave.

As South Africa’s third-largest cave chamber, this remarkable natural attraction features breathtaking limestone formations, towering stalactites and stalagmites, making it an unforgettable educational adventure for curious young explorers and adults alike.

Refuel with family favourites

After a morning of adventure, families can recharge at one of the reserve’s popular restaurants.

The Neck & Deck Café offers the unique opportunity to enjoy breakfast, lunch or refreshments while overlooking the wildlife, with visitors also able to hand-feed the reserve’s friendly resident giraffe.

Meanwhile, the Thatch Café offers another relaxed, family-friendly setting for a delicious meal or a well-earned coffee before heading back out to explore everything the reserve has to offer.

Plenty of fun beyond the wildlife

The adventure doesn’t stop with the animals.

The reserve features dedicated kiddies’ play areas where younger visitors can burn off energy, while older children and adventure seekers can enjoy activities such as 4×4 experiences and the popular Cradle Bike Park, making it easy to turn a family outing into a full day of outdoor fun.

With wildlife encounters, educational experiences, exciting outdoor activities and delicious dining all in one destination, the Bothongo Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve offers everything families need for an unforgettable winter holiday adventure.
