Johannesburg – Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has welcomed the Johannesburg High Court’s decision to grant the National Prosecuting Authority’s Asset Forfeiture Unit a forfeiture order in respect of assets linked to the Maumela Case.
The order permanently seizes luxury assets worth about R326 million linked to businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela, which he acquired through defrauding Tembisa Hospital.

These include upmarket properties in Gauteng, Cape Town and KwaZulu-Natal, luxury vehicles, and other high-value assets acquired through the proceeds of unlawful criminal activities, which will now be forfeited to the State.
“This significant outcome follows an extensive forensic investigation and a review of Tembisa Hospital’s Basic Accounting System by the Specialised Audit Services Unit (SAS) of the National Treasury into alleged tender fraud and corruption at Tembisa Hospital,” explained the Justice Department in a statement on Monday,20 July 2026.
“The investigation was initiated following information provided by the late Babita Deokaran, whose dedication to accountability came at a great personal cost.
“May her soul rest in peace.”
Minister Kubayi stated that this order demonstrates governments commitment to ensuring that we deprive criminals of ill-gotten wealth, which in many cases is used to hide their crimes, escape accountability and fight against the State.
Commenting on the matter, Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi also welcomed the court order.
Minister Motsoaledi said while he regards this court order as a huge milestone, it was only the beginning of a process to confiscate all assets of people involved in looting Tembisa Hospital.
Minister Motsoaledi stated that there were still public servants at both Tembisa Hospital and the Gauteng Department of Health who made this “heinous act possible”, whose assets and pensions still have to be “dealt with”.
He added: “We implore the Assets Forfeiture Unit to expedite the recovery process.
“We are also calling upon law enforcement agencies to complete the job through the arrest and criminal prosecution of Hangwani Maumela and his ilk.
“No one should be allowed to help themselves to resources which were meant for the sick – only a sick society will allow that to happen without any far-reaching and concrete repercussions.”
