Johannesburg – After enduring a torrid time in the hot seat at the Madlanga Commission, Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head Andre Johnson, who was forced to concede shortcomings in her decisions to probe top cops, has decided to quit.
From admitting a misunderstanding of basic principles of law to accepting that she unfairly probed senior police officers at the behest of MP Fadiel Adams, Advocate Johnson’s attempts to explain her shortcomings at the Madlanga Commission were cringeworthy.
The humiliation was unlikely to have a cure.
On Friday, 24 July 2026, a newspaper columnist labelled it a “Crucification”.
On Sunday, 26 July 2026, Advocate Johnson threw in the towel and asked President Cyril Ramaphosa to accept her resignation after more than three decades of service.
In her resignation letter, Advocate Johnson complained that “the attacks on both my person and official capacity have been unprecedented”.
She also revealed that she was turning 56 next month and had already put in a request for retirement.
“Your Excellency [President Ramaphosa] and NDPP, I am humbly requesting you to consider my application for resignation. Whilst my contract requires a three-month notice period, I would request both your consideration of an immediate release from office, thereby waiving the notice period,” wrote Advocate Johnson, adding that if this was acceptable she would be ready to leave in 24 hours.
She expressed her gratitude to the President and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for the “amazing oppoturnity” to head IDAC.
The NPA has reportedly confirmed that it received a letter from Advocate Johnson requesting permission to resign from her post as head of IDAC with immediate effect without serving notice, which it was considering.
