Johannesburg – Fireflies and Ashes has been introducing collectors to new artists and works, and today the spotlight falls on the remarkable work of Percy Maimela.
Entirely self-taught, Maimela has carved out a unique place in contemporary African art through his extraordinary use of unconventional materials, including charcoal, salt, sand, maize meal, and ground coffee.
In 2019, his innovative approach earned him a Guinness World Record for creating the world’s largest coffee mosaic, an achievement that remains unbeaten today.
At the heart of Maimela’s works on exhibition is his ongoing “Little Princess” series, a body of work he began in 2014.
Over the years, “Little Princess ” has grown alongside the artist, becoming a universal figure through whom he explores resilience, identity, hope and the choices that shape our lives.
Her distinctive mask, etched with fingerprint-like patterns, speaks of our DNA, history and shared humanity, while its aerodynamic form suggests the courage to move forward.
The dice remind us that every meaningful journey requires risk, while the teddy bear represents the comfort of what is familiar.
Together, these recurring symbols invite each viewer to find their own story within the work.
There is something deeply uplifting about Percy Maimela’s art.
