TAKING ACTION: Correctional Services Minister Dr. Pieter Groenewald has suspended four officials suspected of fraud
SHARE

Pretoria – Correctional Services Minister Dr. Pieter Groenewald has announced the suspension of four senior officials, including the Chief Financial Officer, following allegations of fraud linked to a coal supply tender.

In a terse statement made available to The Bulrushes today, Tuesday, 8 September 2026, the Department of Correctional Services revealed that a criminal case is being probed by elite crime busters – the Hawks.

“A forensic investigation will also be conducted to determine the full extent of any irregularities, with the aim of prosecuting those found responsible,” the department said.

Dr. Groenewald said the suspensions reflect his commitment to tackling corruption and fraud within the Department.

He emphasised that consequence management for officials who transgress remains a top priority.

The minister said he welcomed what he described as “a breakthrough” in the matter and assured that the Department of Correctional Services will cooperate fully with investigators to ensure accountability.
