Today, Monday 14 September, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that Madiba, who is charged with escape from lawful custody at the Rooigrond Correctional Centre, appeared before the Molopo District Court, where he abandoned his bail application.
“The accused was remanded in custody, and the matter was postponed to 1 October 2026 for further investigation and the possible consolidation of charges,” the NPA said.
“At the time of his most recent escape, Madiba was already facing a separate charge of escape from lawful custody, which is also scheduled for trial on 01 October 2026.”
The NPA said it was “noteworthy” that the accused is currently serving a 25-year term of imprisonment following his conviction on robbery charges.
The charges related to the two escapes from lawful custody are serious.
The NPA said it will pursue all appropriate legal avenues to ensure that these matters were thoroughly prosecuted.
