Johannesburg – Former Deputy Minister of Correctional Services, Thabang Makwetla, has appeared before the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on charges related to BOSASA kickbacks.

Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) spokesperson Henry Mamothame said the charges arose from a R350 000 security upgrade to his home allegedly done by BOSASA in 2015.

At the time, BOSASA specialised in providing services to government, most notably correctional services.

In court on Friday, 30 October 2026, the IDAC prosecutor revealed that the matter had been the subject of a review panel that was “assessing all IDAC cases”.

The review panel confirmed that the matter relating to the contravention of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act and fraud was properly authorised and falls within the IDAC mandate.

It further confirmed that all “disclosures” were provided to the accused to prepare for trial.

The matter was postponed to 19 March 2027 to issue the centralisation certificate and set a High Court date.
