Johannesburg – Gunmen shot dead 17 tavern patrons in a shocking weekend massacre in Extension 3, Wedela, West Rand District, Gauteng.
The cold-blooded murders at Dora’s Tavern on Hector Peterson Street occurred on Saturday, 26 September 2026, at approximately 21:30.
Preliminary reports indicate that a group of about eight armed men opened fire on patrons inside and outside the tavern
Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said the deceased included 13 males and four females.
Narrating events leading to the massacre, Captain Sibeko said some patrons were drinking outside the tavern when the suspects arrived and started shooting.
“The suspects then entered the tavern and continued shooting at patrons inside,” said Captain Sibeko.
“The suspects were reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols.
“They allegedly searched some patrons and took their cellphones before fleeing the scene in two unidentified motor vehicles.
“Two vehicles were also set alight during the incident.”
By the time emergency responders arrived on the scene, several patrons lay down motionless in pools of blood.
“Emergency Medical Services declared all 17 victims dead at the scene,” lamented Captain Sibeko.
“Fifteen other victims sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to medical facilities for further medical treatment.”
The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage.
Gauteng police have mobilised a team of detectives and other specialised units to trace and apprehend the suspects.
Police have opened 17 counts of murder, 15 counts of attempted murder and two counts of malicious damage to property.
Although no arrests have been made at this stage, police have launched a manhunt for the assailants.
Investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, the Gauteng Provincial Government has condemned “in the strongest possible terms” the horrific shooting at the tavern in Wedela, Carletonville.
The provincial government also extended its deepest condolences to the families, friends and communities of all those who lost their lives.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this senseless loss of life,” said Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi.
“There can be no justification for such an attack on innocent people.
“Our thoughts are with the bereaved families and everyone affected by this horrific incident.
”We also wish the injured a speedy and full recovery.”
The provincial government has called on law-enforcement agencies to urgently mobilise all available resources to identify, arrest and bring those responsible to justice.
The provincial government also urged members of the public who may have information that could assist investigators to come forward and cooperate with the police.
For its part, the provincial government said it will continue to work closely with the SAPS, the West Rand District Municipality, the City of Merafong City, and other stakeholders to support the affected community and ensure that the appropriate psychosocial and other support services are made available.
