The United Kingdom on Thursday removed 47 countries from its travel Red List including South Africa.

The Red List, which restricted travel to and from countries considered to have high numbers of Covid-19 cases and low vaccination numbers, was removed from the UK effective Monday, 11 October.

Other countries that were removed from the Red List include Uganda, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe.

The only countries which remain on are Colombia, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Panama, Peru and Venezuela.

Last week SA President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke to his British Counterpart, Boris Johnson, with a view to have South Africa removed from the Red List.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps says it's a "major step forward for travel" as the government announces it will remove 47 countries off the UK's travel red list on Monday, leaving only seven countries left on the list.
