Pretoria – The police have arrested a 50-year-old senior municipal official for fraud, corruption, and defeating and/or obstructing the ends of justice.

The team that arrested the official was identified as the “Madlanga Commission Task Team,” suggesting that the alleged crimes were uncovered in the ongoing Madlanga Commission of inquiry.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe revealed on Saturday, 18 April 2026, that “the official was arrested this morning at his home in Gauteng”.

Brigadier Mathe added: “The Task Team is still searching for other suspects linked to the case.

“These arrests emanate from an ongoing investigation into corruption within the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department.”

The police spokesperson stated that no further comment will be provided on the merits of the case at this stage.

The police did not name the suspect, but the SABC reports that the arrested individual is suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department Deputy Commissioner Julius Mkhwanazi.

The arrest came after Mkhwanazi struggled through a torrid week in which he was grilled by the Madlanga Commission about his alleged involvement in crimes, including murder and robbery.

Mkhwanazi, who regularly claimed amnesia, was left visibly shaken when incriminating audio and video evidence was played during the grilling.

The arrested suspect was expected to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 20 April 2026.
