Potchefstroom – Eight people have died in a major road crash at the intersection of the R500 and R42 in Potchefstroom Road in North West Province.
“A minibus taxi with a trailer carrying 13 occupants and a truck with a load of manganese collided at the early hours of this morning,” the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said Friday, 29 May 2026.
“The allegation is that the minibus was travelling on the R500 from Fochville to Parys, and the truck on the opposite direction of R42 between Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark.
“The truck allegedly failed to stop at the stop street intersection, and the minibus crashed into it, resulting in eight fatal injuries to six males and two females, which includes a female child and five seriously injured persons.”
The Chief Executive Officer of the Road Traffic Management Corporation, Advocate Makhosini Msibi, dispatched a team of accident investigators into the scene of the crash to investigate the real cause of the crash.
Similarly, the case has also been reported at the South African Police Services in Buffelschoek for further processing.
The RTMC advised motorists to consider fog and mist conditions when driving at night and approaching stop intersections.
“If the fog becomes too thick to drive safely, we advise motorists to pull into designated safe locations,” the RTMC said.
