ARRESTED: Yusuf Omar, the owner of Omar’s Motor Den

Johannesburg – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have applauded the arrest of Yusuf Omar, the owner of Omar’s Motor Den CC, in Witbank, Mpumalanga, for contempt of Court in a matter linked to the looting of Tembisa Hospital.

On Friday, 5 June 2026, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) carried out contempt and seizure orders against Omar Motor Den for selling a Bentley linked to well-known businessman Hangwani Maumela.

Maumela is accused of looting more than R816 million through fraudulent contracts linked to the Tembisa Hospital, as part of a broader R2 billion corruption scandal.

The scheme allegedly involved fake suppliers, split tenders, and front companies used to siphon healthcare funds into luxury cars, properties, and personal wealth.

The SIU has explained that the order for contempt of court against Omar relates to the Special Tribunal order of 29 September 2025, which preserves all assets linked to Hangwani Maumela in its Tembisa Hospital investigation.

While carrying out the order, the owner, Omar, was “arrested” for allegedly failing to cooperate and obstructing the SIU and officers from the South African Police Service.

Omar was, however, let out of the back of a police van after about an hour on condition that he cooperate with the authorities. He even handed over CCTV footage of the vehicles in his dealership.

Responding to the highly publicised arrest, the EFF said it “welcomes the seizure of properties and luxury assets linked to Hangwani Maumela as part of the ongoing investigation into the looting of public funds at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital.

“This development represents an important step towards accountability and vindicates the longstanding position of the EFF that those who enriched themselves through the theft of public resources must face the full might of the law.”

The EFF has consistently condemned the industrial-scale looting that took place at Tembisa Hospital and has repeatedly called for the prosecution of all individuals implicated in the theft of funds meant for healthcare services.

“We have maintained that the collapse of public healthcare infrastructure is not accidental, but the direct result of corruption, political protection, and criminal networks operating within the state.

“The seizure of assets must, however, be followed by successful prosecutions and the recovery of all stolen funds.”

The EFF also reiterates its call for justice for slain whistleblower Babita Deokaran and all the others who exposed corruption within the health sector.

Mr Yusuf Omar is now cooperating and is allowing the SIU, SAPS and Curator to execute the order and, as per the order, take CCTV footage from 22 May 2026 onward, failing which the Tribunal authorised an application for Yusuf Omar’s immediate arrest. https://t.co/GLE4bcToAB
