Cape Town – The race for national squash glory moved into sharp focus at the weekend as the country’s leading players secured their places for the Growthpoint SA Nationals, which will be staged at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront from August 20 to 22.
Eight regional qualifying hubs hosted playoffs around South Africa, producing a field that blends established champions, current stars, and a wave of emerging talent eager to make their mark on the biggest domestic stage of the year.
Leading the charge into the national championships are top seeds Hayley Ward of Eastern Province and SA Country Districts ace Dewald van Niekerk, both of whom reinforced their credentials with commanding performances in their respective regional qualifiers.
Ward was in complete control at the Gqeberha hub, defeating fellow EP player Jacqui Ryder 3-0, while five-time champion Van Niekerk underlined his status as one of the favourites for the men’s title when he comfortably dispatched Gareth Craigen 3-0 in Potchefstroom.
Yet neither player will have any illusions about the challenge awaiting them in Cape Town.
The women’s draw, which this year does not include defending champion and six-time winner Alex Commins, boasts a formidable blend of experience and youthful ambition.
Former champions Milnay Louw and Lizelle Muller will arrive knowing exactly what it takes to win a national title.
Louw, who lifted the trophy in 2017 and 2019, booked her place by overcoming Megan Shannon in the Western Province qualifier, while 2021 champion Muller topped the Eden hub in Mossel Bay.
Among those hoping to usher in a new era are second seed Helena Hudson and Joburg Squash’s Teagan Russell.
Hudson continued her impressive rise by winning the Northerns qualifier in Pretoria, while Russell emerged victorious in Johannesburg.
The women’s field is further strengthened by the presence of Alexa Pienaar, Kim McDonald, and Keschia Schlebusch, all of whom claimed qualification victories over the weekend and will believe they are capable of upsetting the higher seeds.
The men’s competition promises to be equally compelling.
Van Niekerk heads the seedings ahead of Northerns stalwart Damian Groenewald, who cruised through the Pretoria qualifier with a straight-games victory over Connor Earl.
Groenewald’s younger brother, Luhann, is regarded as one of South Africa’s most exciting prospects and demonstrated his growing maturity with a convincing 3-0 win over Ethan Robinson in the KZN Midlands qualifier.
Ruan Olivier also enters the championships in strong form after claiming the Western Province qualifying title, while John Anderson and Dean Venter have continued to build momentum through a series of impressive performances on the Assore PSA circuit and regional events.
The experienced campaigners are unlikely to make life easy for the younger generation.
Former national champion JP Brits, who won the Eden qualifier in Mossel Bay, remains one of the most accomplished players in the country and possesses the tactical nous to trouble any opponent in the draw.
Several of the qualifying tournaments produced gripping encounters.
The closest contest came in Bloemfontein, where Reuel Videler edged Judah Phillips in a five-game thriller.
After dropping the opening game, Videler fought back strongly before surviving a late comeback to prevail 11-9 in the decider.
Elsewhere, Schlebusch showed resilience to recover from losing the first game in the North West women’s final before defeating Elske Garbers 3-1, while Louw overcame a third-game setback to secure her place in Cape Town.
With just under two months remaining before the country’s premier domestic squash event gets underway, the qualifiers have confirmed the depth of talent currently on display across South Africa.
The established champions have booked their places, the top seeds have justified their rankings, and a talented group of rising stars is ready to challenge the status quo.
