Johannesburg – Two men have been arrested in Booysens after Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit officers recovered suspected stolen copper sheets valued at about R16 million.
According to the JMPD, the arrests followed an intelligence-driven operation linked to a theft case opened at Mayden Wharf SAPS in Durban.
Acting on a tip-off, JMPD officers traced a truck transporting the stolen copper to a warehouse at the corner of Treu and Vlak Streets in Booysens, in Johannesburg.
A search of the premises uncovered copper sheets inside two trucks parked in the warehouse yard.
Two Chinese men, both aged 43, were taken into custody for possession of suspected stolen property.
They were detained at Johannesburg Central Police Station.
JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla commended the successful collaboration and intelligence-led policing that led to the recovery.
He said the JMPD remains committed to combating crimes involving critical infrastructure and will continue working closely with law enforcement agencies and communities to bring perpetrators to justice.
