Port Shepstone – A suspect in the highly publicised theft of drugs worth an estimated R60 million from the Hawks office in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal, has been granted bail.
The suspect, 49-year-old Lucas Legabe, appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court this morning, Monday 14 September 2026, where he was granted bail of R50 000 with conditions.
Legabe was ordered to report at Brooklyn Police Station every Monday between 6am and 6pm.
He was also ordered to hand over all his travel documents to the investigating officer.
Legabe faces several charges, including theft, housebreaking, and dealing in, or alternatively possession of, illicit drugs worth over R260 million in the drug consignment.
The matter was adjourned to 1 December 2026.
Matters around the theft of more than 250 kg of cocaine in November 2021 were ventilated at the ongoing Madlanga Commission.
The drugs, seized earlier that year at Durban’s port, were stored in a facility with no alarms or cameras.
While Legabe has since been arrested, charged, and granted bail, senior Hawks officials face tough questions about negligence and possible inside involvement.
